There are so many 21st parties, Im so broke :(

2 weeks ago, i went over to aston's party. i like his elevated garden(: and a very nice place for everyone to sit and chat.hehe i only took two photos that evening though. i think i was busy chatting and catching up with my exclassmates(: and aston stays at bedok! so it was really convenient for me to go home. Here's a picture of the birthday boy with his super delicious chocolate banana cake! of which i shamelessly took 3 servings HAHAHA

One week later, I was over to bernard's for another celebration. it was slightly more crowded and one thing in common with birthday parties is that all u really need to do is set up some tables and chairs and basically guests our age will find our seats and entertain ourselves and chat. and understandably, the host wont be with us all the time. hope bernard liked my gift. got a small hole in my pocket :(

Here's the huge birthday cake!

(From left) Bert's ah ma, girlfriend, bernard, mummy
hahaha then everyone was poking fun of his girlfriend.."come come..take family photo" LOL.

Hrmm..should I have a birthday party of my own? It doesnt seem like having it at my place is a good idea..help? =/

Does anyone subscribe to Wordsmith.org? haha i love it! it sends me a word a day although i have no idea how many of those have faithfully stayed in my word bank. but its always nice to come across new words. and such a healthy dose! just one word a day(: today's word is: Pickwickian

MEANING:
adjective:
1. Marked by generosity, naivete, or innocence.
2. Not intended to be taken in a literal sense.

ETYMOLOGY:
After Samuel Pickwick, a character in the novel Pickwick Papers (serialized 1836-1837) by Charles Dickens. Mr Pickwick is known for his simplicity and kindness. In the novel Mr. Pickwick and Mr. Blotton call each other names and it appears later that they were using the offensive words only in a Pickwickian sense and had the highest regard for each other.
Another term that arose from the book is Pickwickian syndrome, which refers to a combination of interlinked symptoms such as extreme obesity, shallow breathing, tiredness, sleepiness, etc. The character with these symptoms was not Mr. Pickwick, but Fat Joe, so the term is really coined after the book's title. The medical term for the condition is obesity-hypoventilation syndrome.

USAGE:
"I kept a happiness diary, after the discovery by Professor Sonia Lyubomirsky that collating one's daily blessings resulted in Pickwickian good cheer."
Hannah Betts; The Pursuit of Happiness is Driving Me to Despair; The Daily Telegraph (London, UK); Apr 3, 2009.

"Mr. Tribe: Now, anybody reading that would realize that's a deadline only in a kind of Pickwickian sense. It's not a real deadline."
A Transcript of Arguments in the Supreme Court Over the Florida Recount; The New York Times; Dec 2, 2000.

"A Pickwickian chairman, rosy-cheeked, in frock coat and old-fashioned cravat, adopted the role of Santa Claus."
Mungo MacCallum; Growing Up: The Day Had Come; Sydney Morning Herald (Australia); Jan 21, 1987.

lovely(: and its actually a word! in a queer, endearing way. been to two 21st parties recently..will post them up soon!

I just received an email from a friend who forwarded rather disturbing images of a eight year old boy whose hand was to be run over by a lorry or truck, whatever, as a form of punishment for stealing bread. The mail included an emotional protest which goes.. "his arm would be crushed and will lose its use permanently. A religion of peace and love, they say?"

An unsuspecting reader is going to echo the protests of this seemingly inhumane act and again, cast a gloomy and prejudicial perception to an already stereotypical standpoint towards the Islamic religion. But just as much as I brought forth my views in my previous post, I hope that we read mails coming from unknown sources with a pinch of salt. As I attempted to bring out the discerning reader in me, I confirmed my suspicion(:

I took this from urbanlegends.about.com..

"The preceding images are apparently authentic -- they were published as such in 2005 on the Iranian news Web sitePeyke Iran, at any rate -- but the accompanying caption doesn't jibe with the original report and was clearly fabricated after the fact.

According to a Peyke Iran spokesperson who corrected the record last November in a note posted on Little Green Footballs, the young boy whose arm was run over was not being punished for a crime. He was part of a "Maareke giry" or street magic act and allegedly performed the stunt for money (note the gentleman speaking into a microphone in image #1). The seventh and eighth pictures in the series, which appear to show the child shaken but otherwise unharmed after the ordeal, were omitted from the email flier but can still be viewed on Peykeiran.com (where all the images are attributed to photographer Siamak Yari)."

www.hoax-slayer.com (HAHA how apt the name) reaffirmed the above..

A seventh image, showing the boy after the stunt, is generally left out of the protest message

"Thus, it seems that this long running diatribe against Islam is simply the result of a misinterpretation of the event depicted in the photographs.

Of course, even without the erroneous religious interpretation that has been placed on it, many would consider it reprehensible to use a young child in what appears to be a dangerous, painful and frightening stunt, even if the child was paid for his participation. However, forwarding the email in its present form will do nothing to help this child or others like him.

The obvious excesses and human rights violations perpetrated by such groups as the Taliban under the umbrella of Sharia Law quite rightly generate intense debate and condemnation from many commentators. But, muddying the waters with misinformation such as that contained in this email forward is decidedly counter-productive and will serve only to widen divisions and foster even more hatred and misunderstanding in our already strife-torn world. "

Now now..you may simply argue that on the flip side of the same coin, these two websites might have bogus sources as well, and how reliable can they be? For all you know, that boy probably really stole the bread and was accepting his punishment on that fateful day. Technically speaking, that's true. If u are fighting a case in court, that is. Fact was, I saw the captions and the whole report didnt sound plausible at all. If the punishment was part of the legislation for an islamic country, the whole sentence would definitely not be carried out in the dusty streets with a trusty lorry and driver. More like a film set in the medieval times. Worse. You have this man with a micro-phone to remind the people on the streets that you cannot escape the long arms of the law. (hahahahaha sorry sorry self-entertainment. hehe!) now seriously, all I wanted was to find a source that was in line with my suspicion, and that was more than enough to assuage any guilt that this report could vaguely be real.

and NOW! its time for..Bogus Mails 101: How To Tell??

While it is impossible to be completely sure, this is merely to serve as a rough guide to discern fact from fiction. Because there are so many people out there who were taken for a ride and were left exploited for their emotional vulnerability.

Rule 1: Begin to twitch ur eye brows in doubt when they use emotive punctuation. like.. " look at this !!!" or.. "how can they do this..??!?"

Rule 2: It starts getting really shady when they use text tools to emphasize a point. big fonts..   wah!! coloured fonts..  wah!! bold and big fonts and everything together.. wahhh!!

Rule 3: If it sounds ridiculous to you, it probably is.

Congratulations! U are now a discerning reader. let's not allow racist mails from cloud our senses and accentuate prejudicial racism(: yayy!

According to a report in the TODAY paper, April 6th, Monday..

Afghan President Hamid Karzai has come under heavy fire from his allies, including the United States, Canada, and France, for signing a law that western media reports say means shia women cannot refuse to have sex with their husbands or leave the house without their spouses permission.

Under one article legislating the frequency of sexual relations between shia husbands and wives, husbands have the right to sex every fourth night unless the wife is ill. The United Nations Development Fund for Women has said the law "legalises the rape of a wife by her husband".

"I think this law is abhorent," Mr Obama said. "We think that it is very important for us to be sensitive to local culture but we also think that there are certain basic principles that all nations should uphold, and respect for women and respect for their freedom and integrity is an important principle."

Well, they said..make love, not war. What is the world coming to..

oh yayy(: met up with zhenming today and we had a nice chat before we went in search for a nice present. and despite him giving some horrible advice like..getting that pearl necklace, we had a great time(: and okay lah..he did give some constructive suggestions like a cookbook and calling his mum to ask for some good places to go to buy some lao zhi hao food like dao sa pia. hahaha in the end his mum suggested egg tarts in niu che shui. but still its a very nice gesture from him. yay big hugs(:

all u blog stalkers..come out and tag so at least i know u read my blog and i will know what gossip/bitching/secrets to censor on my blog. (erm well u know..a secret sometimes is a secret not because its supposed to be kept as one, but rather to add spice to blog content and certainly very blog worthy.) now dont worry..people who have secrets with me..u know who u are..just leave a tag obediently. and try not to wrestle from that leash..its only going to hurt more.. muahahahaha.

oh my..what just happened? why is there an extra paragraph.. who typed that paragraph? what blog stalkers..

Love sick? Then this is just the cure u need. Trash prescribed this for me, and the pills taste so lovely! In fact, i am afraid that the advent of love pills will fall into the hands of drug abusers who will comsume a massive overdose due to their uncanny taste with the popularly known m&ms! oh wait! before they know it, they will then attain a love high! and go around giving strangers on the streets big hugs and soon all badies who once lurked in the dark alleys will flutter and dance in the day with sugar lollies held up high! who knows crying babies will be whining for more after taking their pills too!

How wonderful..these pills dont even have an expiry date(: its so fun to see your childhood fantasies coming true. and having a best friend share these wonderful times with u. yayy(:

haha i realised that each time i blog, my entries come as such a rarity that i am compelled to start my entries with opening phrases that express exhilaration and contentment at the same time. words like..alas! im blogging!.. or finally! i got down to.. ecetera. which is quite sad. especially while i am sinfully aware that i have had a loyal following amongst a group of fans; one of whom has even threatened to abandon my blog following my empty promises to blog, yet her name has still found its way to my tagboard ever so often. such is the appeal. and as the wise adage say..the pen is mightier than the sword. true, with such power does come my inadvertent responsibilty to blog on a more regular basis..

and what better way to fulfil that resolution than to write with such enthusiasm once more!! (:

for the less informed, i finally got my mac. and i havent regretted it one bit (: haha as the IT fair came, i was seriously considering between the fujitsu lifebook and the macbook. windows certainly takes all the compatibility issues out of the picture but i always thought the mac and i belonged to one another. lol. in the end i relented and bought the lappie which costs more given its specifications. but haha, the IT fair really gave out quite a lot of freebies. almost more than i could bargain for. in the end i was given all the screen, wrist, and case, keypad guards for free! of which actually costs above a hundred o.o not to mention a free wireless microsoft arc mouse which i find really stylish(: so yayy..im a happy mac user now(:

so looking forward to meeting mass come this saturday. im sure it'll be the last time i'll be seeing him for at least a few months as his embarks on furthering his studies in japan. happy for him(: hopes he comes back as some renowned physicist. hahaha. and i finally get to see the O' elusive huili. because she's too busy at her in law's..*cough. i meant law's..erm curriculum. not to mention clement and now awyong as well (: kegan is bringing his new spalding ball and i know trash is itching to play. haha i dont know it'll be alright to bring her on saturday?

life's been treating me well.. very well. thank you(:
